Viggo Mortensen is the Aragorn but sadly he will not reprise his role in upcoming The Lord of the Rings prequel, “The Hunt for Gollum.”
Director and returning star Andy Serkis confirmed that Mortensen will not be part of the upcoming film during a recent interview with Screen Rant, following initial reports from December by Knight Edge Media.
The film, set between the events of The Hobbit Trilogy and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, will see some returning actors portraying younger versions of their characters.
While Ian McKellen is confirmed to return as Gandalf, and Elijah Wood has hinted at reprising Frodo, Mortensen’s absence marks a significant change for fans eager to see the full original cast back on screen.

Serkis has previously expressed interest in using AI technology to de-age actors such as Orlando Bloom, though it remains unconfirmed whether Bloom will appear as a younger Legolas.
The prequel is shaping up to be a mix of familiar faces and new talent, with Peter Jackson returning as a producer and recent casting announcements including Kate Winslet in a mystery role.

The film is slated for a December 17, 2027 release, giving fans over a year to anticipate how the story will unfold without one of its central original stars.
Mortensen’s absence may be disappointing to longtime fans, but the evolving cast and creative team signal a fresh take on Middle-earth while maintaining strong ties to the beloved original trilogy.
