According to some media reports, the magnitude of the earthquake that occurred this morning was 7.4 and according to others, it was 7.2. The epicenter of the earthquake was 25 km away from Hualien city and 15.5 km below the surface of the earth. Taiwanese media released a video of the devastation and collapsed buildings caused by the earthquake.
Some media reports have claimed that the number of buildings that collapsed in Taiwan as a result of the earthquake is 26, of which 50% were in Hualien. The Samsoulian Center Taipei said that this was the strongest earthquake to hit Taiwan in the last 25 years.
Panic also spread in Japan, China, and the Philippines due to earthquake aftershocks and tsunami warnings. Japan has ordered people in the southern coastal region of Okinawa to evacuate immediately in anticipation of a possible tsunami, sparking panic.
Earthquake tremors were also felt in many cities of Japan and China. The JMA said that tsunami waves up to 1 meter high may arise in the region. At 9:18 a.m. local time, the height of the tsunami waves was 30 cm at Unagoni Island.
