A banner reading “Stop the Genocide” was being displayed on the field during the pre-match ceremony prior to the UEFA Women’s Champions League Final between Barcelona and Olympique Lyon at San Mames Stadium in Bilbao, Spain on Saturday.
Barcelona retained the Women’s Champions League as goals from Aitana Bonmati and Alexia Putellas secured a 2-0 win over Lyon in Bilbao.
“Stop the Genocide” banner with Palestine flag was placed on the pitch ahead of the final. The banner also urged the EU not to participate in the ongoing genocide in Gaza.
This week, Ireland, Norway and Spain announced that they were officially recognizing the State of Palestine on Wednesday, May 22. This was the first time since Sweden made a similar decision in 2014 that European states have taken this symbolic step.
