Veteran sports journalist, commentator, and former first-class cricketer Qamar Ahmed passed away in Karachi on Thursday at the age of 88, his family confirmed. According to family sources, he had suffered a heart attack two weeks earlier.
Renowned for his insightful reporting and deep knowledge of the game, Ahmed earned widespread recognition in both cricketing and media circles.
His work took him across major cricketing nations, where he reported on some of the sport’s most significant moments and personalities.
Qamar Ahmed represented Hyderabad in 17 first-class matches before transitioning into a distinguished career in sports journalism.
Over a span of seven decades, he established himself as one of Pakistan’s most respected cricket writers and commentators, covering more than 450 Test matches around the world.
He also authored his autobiography, For More Than a Game, chronicling his journey from student life in Hyderabad, Sindh, to his cricketing career and later years in London, where he contributed to leading British publications while documenting cricket history.
