The Sindh government launched a new system called the Automated Fare Collection System (AFCS) on Saturday. This system allows people to pay for their bus rides using a smart card on the Peoples Bus Service.
Speaking at the launch event in Karachi, Sindh Minister for Transport and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon said that the government’s main goal is to provide as many conveniences as possible to the people using modern technology.
He explained that initially, the smart card can be used on Route 1 and 9 buses. This new automated system will make the fare collection process more transparent, he added.
Memon proudly mentioned the Pink Buses, which are exclusively for women. He noted that only a few countries around the world have such a service.
Despite the increase in petrol and diesel prices over the past few years, Memon said that the Sindh government has decided to keep the bus fare at Rs50 per person for a journey of 35 to 40 kilometers.
The minister also mentioned that the Red Line BRT project was delayed during the caretaker government’s time. However, the government is currently working on the Orange Line and Yellow Line projects. He also mentioned plans to introduce new routes for the Peoples Bus and EV bus services in the near future.
