The Sindh government has announced a province-wide ban on the manufacture, sale, and use of plastic bags, including in Karachi.
While the latest notification does not specify an exact enforcement date, officials confirmed that the decision aligns with earlier efforts to curb plastic pollution. A previous ban was introduced via a notification on September 27, 2019, with enforcement beginning October 1, 2019.
The Sindh Environment Department emphasized that the ban is part of a broader initiative to tackle environmental and marine pollution, as well as the clogging of sewage and drainage systems caused by plastic waste.
Violations of the ban will be subject to legal action, including potential arrest and penalties, in accordance with applicable laws. The move is backed by the Sindh Environmental Protection Act, 2014, which prohibits the production and use of non-biodegradable plastic products.
Officials reiterated that the ban reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable environment across the province.
