Samsung surpasses Apple to reclaim top position in global smartphone market

6.7 million 5G smartphones sold by Samsung in 2019

SOUTH KOREA: The South Korean smartphone maker Samsung has managed to surpass  Apple and reclaim the top position in global smartphone sales in the month of February 2021.

According to a recent report by Strategy Analytics, Samsung saw a surge in sales which helped it reclaim its position. Reports revealed that the company managed to ship 24 million units of its smartphones in February 2021 claiming 23.1 percent of the market share.

On the other hand, Apple managed to sell 23 million units, making for a 22.2 percent market share. Xiaomi, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer claimed the third position with a market share of 11.5 percent, followed by Vivo and OPPO with 10.6 percent and 8.5 percent market share.

Note that these smartphone brands have an almost none-too-limited presence in the United States. In January 2021, Samsung had a market share of 15.6 percent while Apple stood at 25.4 percent. As compared to last year, Samsung saw a 26 percent increase in shipments.

The company’s sales were most likely pushed by the launch of the Galaxy S21 series in January. One more significant aspect is the diminish in Huawei’s share. The Chinese company always gave Samsung a tough time before the US sanctions were imposed.

From the start of the Galaxy S21 series, Samsung is expected to boost global exports and acquire market share in the US-banned Huawei.
