Pakistan has significantly expanded its Earth observation satellite network over the past 16 months, attracting considerable attention within Indian security circles and the media.
According to Indian media reports, Pakistan launched a total of six satellites between January 2025 and June 2026. These satellites have reportedly been positioned in orbit to provide continuous Earth observation and monitoring capabilities.
The report suggests that the satellites may focus particularly on northern India and the Jammu and Kashmir region. This development comes more than a year after India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire following Operation Sindoor.
While conditions on the ground have remained relatively stable, Pakistan has quietly enhanced its space-based surveillance capabilities, with Chinese technical assistance and launch support reportedly playing a significant role.
According to the report, Pakistan has recently launched several advanced Earth observation satellites, including PAUSAT-1, PRSC-EO1, PRSS-2, HS-1, PRSC-EO2 and PRSC-EO3. These satellites are said to possess high-resolution imaging capabilities, while some are equipped with advanced technologies such as hyperspectral sensing and artificial intelligence-based data processing.
The network has reportedly been designed to capture repeated imagery of the same locations, enabling continuous monitoring of changes on the ground. Collectively, it is believed to provide observation capabilities not only over India but also across Afghanistan, Iran, China and parts of the northern Indian Ocean.
The report notes that Pakistan’s space programme has experienced remarkable growth in recent years. From 1961 until recently, Pakistan had launched a total of only 15 satellites, whereas six of those have been deployed during the past 16 months alone.
Experts attribute much of this rapid progress to international cooperation, particularly with China. According to the report, most of the recently launched satellites were either carried into space by Chinese launch vehicles or developed through joint technological collaboration between China and Pakistan.
One notable satellite, PRSC-EO3, was launched in April 2026. The report states that its orbital configuration differs from a conventional sun-synchronous orbit, allowing more frequent observation opportunities over South Asia, particularly northern India and the Kashmir region.
Pakistan officially presents these satellites as civilian assets intended for applications such as agriculture, disaster monitoring and natural resource assessment. However, analysts note that modern Earth observation satellites often possess dual-use capabilities.
High-resolution sensors, hyperspectral imaging systems and advanced data analytics can enable the monitoring of military installations, detection of infrastructure changes, tracking of ground movements and surveillance of maritime activity. As a result, such systems are commonly utilised worldwide for both civilian and defence-related purposes.
The development comes at a time when India has faced setbacks in several important space missions. Between 2025 and 2026, a number of Earth observation and navigation projects reportedly encountered difficulties or failed to achieve their objectives, including EOS-N1, EOS-09 and NavIC NVS-02.
Experts argue that space-based surveillance has become a critical pillar of national security in the modern era. Given the increasing regional competition in space technology, India may need to further strengthen its satellite capabilities to maintain strategic balance.
Overall, the rapid expansion of Pakistan’s satellite network underscores the growing strategic importance of space technology in the region and may have significant implications for future security, intelligence and surveillance strategies.
