LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has replaced Mian Aslam Iqbal with Rana Aftab Ahmad Khan as its candidate for the Chief Ministerial position of Punjab.
Despite Mian Aslam Iqbal securing protective bails from the Peshawar High Court in 19 cases across different cities, ongoing police inquiries led PTI to reconsider its decision.
“The party leadership, in consultation with Mr Iqbal, has decided to nominate Rana Aftab Ahmad Khan for the CM position as the police from the entire Punjab are at the Punjab Assembly to arrest our CM candidate Aslam Iqbal,” Hammad Azhar wrote on X.
“Rana Aftab is the senior most member of the PA who in the past got elected PA member five times.”
According to the schedule made public on Sunday, Aftab Khan and Maryam Nawaz would face off for the chief ministership on Monday at 11 a.m.
It also said nomination forms could be submitted by Sunday at 5 p.m.
In an attempt to appoint Maryam Nawaz as the nation’s first female chief minister, the PML-N has nominated her.
Meanwhile on Saturday, Malik Ahmed Khan of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) secured victory as the Speaker of the Punjab Assembly.
