Spanish tennis legend Rafael Nadal retired from the sport in 2024 at the age of 38, having won 22 Grand Slam titles, including a record 14 at the French Open. Known for being both reserved and polite, he has long remained a private figure, and much about the man who dominated tennis for so many years is still not widely known.
However, that is about to change. Director Zach Heinzerling’s new four-part documentary, “Rafa”, which premieres on Netflix on May 29, will reveal much that has remained private for years.
The docuseries provides an intimate portrait of Rafael Nadal’s 22-year career, highlighting his intense battles with injury and his demanding journey through multiple comebacks.
It features candid conversations with Nadal himself, his uncle Toni Nadal, and tennis greats including Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, among many others.

The documentary also offers rare insight into Nadal’s famous on-court rituals, his relentless, almost Sisyphean determination, his close bond with his family, and the difficult decisions surrounding the end of his career.
From his early start in tennis at the age of three to his emotional final seasons on the professional circuit, the series captures both his greatest triumphs and the physical and emotional toll behind his legacy.
It also includes exclusive, never-before-seen footage, archival material, and glimpses into his daily life.
