The Punjab government has introduced a 30-minute reduction in public school hours for the summer season, effective from April 7 to October 15, in response to rising temperatures and warnings from the Meteorological Department regarding potential heatwaves in the coming weeks.
Authorities have also hinted at the possibility of announcing early summer vacations should temperatures reach extreme levels.
A directive has been issued to commissioners and deputy commissioners across the province, highlighting the need to adjust school timings to minimize the effects of the scorching heat on students. Officials have stressed the importance of starting summer vacations earlier if conditions worsen.
Moreover, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has instructed educational institutions to ensure the availability of cold and clean drinking water throughout school premises.
Schools and colleges have also been advised to encourage students to wear light and loose-fitting clothing to stay cool during the intense summer heat.
