ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is actively considering to file a reference, seeking to cancel the party registration of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN).

The move comes after reports surfaced that PMLN supremo Nawaz Sharif attended a crucial meeting of the ruling coalition of Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) virtually, and persuaded them to boycott Supreme Court’s proceedings regarding election delays.

None of the member in ruling coalition of PDM wants elections to be held in 90 days after dissolution of assemblies in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a deadline set by the Constitution.
Nawaz Sharif, who left Pakistan in 2019 under the pretext of getting medical treatment abroad, has since been staying in London and running the party’s affairs. He has been declared an absconder by courts in Pakistan for repeatedly failing to appear despite summons.

In a tweet on Sunday, Fawad Chaudhry accused Nawaz Sharif of violating the Election Act, stating that an absconder was making decisions for the party. He also claimed that, following Nawaz Sharif’s instructions, PMLN announced that they would not accept the Supreme Court’s verdict, which could result in action under article 6 of the constitution.

Political analysts believe that if PTI’s reference moves forward, it could have implications for PMLN to some extent although the Election Commission of Pakistan has also been accused by the PTI of being ‘B team’ of the PMLN.
