ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has challenged the acceptance of nomination papers of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader and former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gillani for Senate elections.
PTI’s Fareed Rehman filed an objection in the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) against Gillani’s nomination, alleging he has concealed the facts in the nomination papers.
He stated that Gillani does not meet the criteria under Article 62 of the constitution and did not mention his conviction in the contempt of court case in his nomination papers. He sought rejection of Gillani’s nomination papers for the Senate elections.
It must be mentioned that Yousaf Raza Gillani is the joint candidate of the opposition alliance Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) contesting from Islamabad.
The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) had also announced to support Gillani in the polls. Two former premiers Raja Pervez Ashraf and Shahid Khaqan Abbasi acted as proposer and seconder in the candidate’s paper.
Former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has maintained that former premier Syed Yusuf Raza Gillani’s candidature is being supported by PML-N and they will strive to ensure his victory.
He said PMl-N supremo Nawaz Sharif has also extended his wholehearted support to Gillani. He added that Gilani is bound to win the polls since he is the most suited candidate for the slot.
The PML-N stalwart that he hS suggested to PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari personally to field Gillani for the Senate seat from the federal capital.
