Islamabad: The Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) has stated that the country has sufficient sugar reserves and there is no need to import sugar.
According to the association sought govt’s permission to export an excessive 500,000 metric tonnes of sugar.
The PSMA in a letter penned to the Federal Minister for National Food Security, maintained that the sugar industry is fully capable of ensuring an uninterrupted supply across the country and rejected concerns about any shortage.
It added that importing sugar at this stage would place an unnecessary financial burden on the national exchequer and negatively affect local sugar mills and farmers.
The association urged the government to rely on domestic production and avoid sugar imports, emphasizing that existing stocks are sufficient to meet market demand.
The PSMA said for the next crushing seassion 8 million metric tonnes of sugar will be available for the next session.
