Why is Sonam Wangchuk on a hunger strike?

Environmental activist and education reform advocate Sonam Wangchuk has launched an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, demanding accountability over the alleged examination paper leak controversy.

Wangchuk has called for the resignation of India’s Education Minister, alleging that repeated exam paper leaks have jeopardized the future of millions of students and exposed serious flaws in the country’s examination system.

Speaking at the protest site, Wangchuk said students deserve a fair and transparent recruitment and education process. He urged the government to take responsibility and introduce stronger safeguards to prevent such incidents in the future.

The hunger strike has drawn support from students, activists, and civil society groups, who have gathered at Jantar Mantar to express solidarity. Protesters are demanding strict action against those responsible for the leaks and comprehensive reforms to restore confidence in the examination system.

The government has not officially responded to Wangchuk’s latest demands. However, the issue of exam paper leaks has sparked widespread debate across India, with growing calls for greater accountability and reforms to protect students’ interests.

Doctors monitoring Mr Wangchuk say his condition has steadily worsened during the fast.

According to health updates released by the protest organisers, he has lost more than 8.4kg since beginning the hunger strike.

His blood pressure and blood sugar levels have also fallen, prompting repeated warnings from doctors.

Organisers say he now experiences dizziness when standing, struggles to walk without assistance and has become physically weak.
