With less than a month to go, preparations are in full swing for the fifth edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) which shall return to our cricket grounds. PSL fever is expected to grip the nation as the days get closer for the glitzy T20 tournament.
Cricket enthusiasts are eagerly waiting for the popular event. The sales of tickets have already started online and are priced between Rs500 to Rs5000 to ensure affordability for fans who are expected to turn up in huge numbers.
Most of the cricketers have been retained by their respective franchises although many prominent names particularly foreign players have been released. Reigning champions Quetta Gladiators will begin the event in the opening ceremony at the National Stadium in Karachi, where Sarfaraz Ahmed’s side will start their title defense with two-time former winners Islamabad United.
There will more chances to watch a game as all 34 matches this year are being played on home grounds. This is a welcome sign proving that the security situation has improved and Pakistan is a safe destination to play cricket. The matches will be played in Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi and Multan. The curtains will draw with the final in Lahore on March 22.
For over a month, the entire nation will be united and transfixed on the event. If the tournament is held successfully, it will be an immense boost to Pakistan’s economy and tourism. The government will certainly present it as a major achievement. The presence of 36 foreign stars shows their confidence in playing in Pakistan. Many of them have praised the hospitality and environment in the country.
Another question remains whether Prime Minister Imran Khan or any high-profile political personality will be in attendance. The prime minister has stayed away from the event in recent years over criticism of the standard of players which did not go down well with cricket fans. It needs to be seen if he eventually makes his presence at the event.
There is no doubt the PSL will give a significant boost to the economy. More importantly, it provides an opportunity for an entertainment starved nation to see their cricket heroes in action and reinforce their love for the game. The entire nation should get behind the tournament and show their passion for cricket.
