During the coldest days of the year in Karachi, the price of a dozen eggs has risen by Rs13 this week. A single egg now costs Rs40 in the city.
Retailers blamed the situation on the expensive feed of chicken and skyrocketing wholesale rates.
Egg prices in Karachi hover at around Rs400 per dozen from Rs280-300 until a few months ago. Retailers said that they are purchasing eggs at high prices from the wholesalers who in turn blamed it on feed prices.
Since the price went up, a large number of families are buying limited numbers of eggs instead of a dozen.
The cost of cheaper anda and paratha breakfast at local restaurants has also increased making it unaffordable for many.
The wholesalers say they are witnessing a decline in the demand for eggs and attributed the price hikes to overpriced chicken feed.
