ISLAMABAD: The polling for by-elections on six general seats of the Senate has concluded in the National Assembly, as well as the Balochistan and Sindh assemblies, with the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) securing four out of six seats, while PML-N and JUI secured one seat each.
In Islamabad, PPP’s Yousuf Raza Gilani emerged victorious with 204 votes, securing the lone Senate seat from the capital against Sunni Ittehad Council’s Ilyas Mehrban Chaudhry, who received 88 votes. A total of 301 votes were cast, with nine being rejected.
In the Sindh Assembly, where Provincial Election Commissioner Shareefullah Khan presided, 124 votes were cast. PPP clinched both Senate seats in the province, with Jam Saifullah Dharejo receiving 58 votes and Aslam Abaro securing 57 votes. Shazia Sohail and Nazeerullah of the Sunni Ittehad Council each received four votes, while one vote was rejected.
In Balochistan, PPP’s Abdul Qudoos Bizenjo won with 23 votes, PML-N’s Dostain Domki secured victory with 17 votes, and JUI’s Shakoor Ghaizai claimed a seat with 16 votes. BAP’s Mubeen Khilji polled five votes.
During the voting in the Balochistan Assembly, 61 out of the total 62 members cast their votes, with BNP-Awami leader Asad Baloch abstaining from voting. Baloch had previously announced a boycott of both the presidential election and the Senate by-election during the previous assembly session.
All six senators elected will serve for a term of three years. These seats became vacant following the resignations of senators elected to the Upper House in 2021, including Yousuf Raza Gilani, Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, Nisar Khuhro, Jam Mehtab, Prince Ahmad Umar, and Sarfaraz Bugti.
