The Karachi electric bus service has been facing operational disruptions due to ongoing power outages in the city, which have affected the charging and routine functioning of multiple routes. The situation has led to partial suspension of services and forced the administration to rely on alternative arrangements to keep public transport running.
According to local media, the situation has created difficulties in maintaining regular operations on several routes. The management of the Peoples Bus Service said that electricity supply to the Mehran Depot has been suspended for the past three days, affecting the charging of electric buses.
Due to this issue, the administration has temporarily deployed hybrid buses on various routes as a substitute for electric vehicles to ensure minimum inconvenience for commuters.
Officials said that the EV-1 route operates from Malir Cantt to Sea View, while the EV-3 route runs from Malir Cantt to Numais.
Similarly, the R-1 Pink Bus service operates from Khokhrapar to Dockyard. All these routes are managed from the Mehran Depot and are primarily dedicated to electric buses.
Transport authorities have warned that if electricity supply to the Mehran Depot is not restored soon, it may become difficult to continue services on these routes, potentially forcing a suspension of operations and affecting thousands of daily passengers.
