The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast the early arrival of the 2026 monsoon season during the first week of July, issuing a nationwide weather alert including landslides in the hilly areas.
According to the Met Office, a westerly wave entering the country’s upper regions on the night of June 30, along with moisture from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, is expected to trigger widespread rain, windstorms, and thunderstorms.
This wet weather is likely to bring some relief from the ongoing hot and humid conditions.
Rainfall is forecast across Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Gilgit-Baltistan, parts of Balochistan, and northern Sindh between July 1 and July 6, with isolated heavy downpours in several areas.
Big cities including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Peshawar, Faisalabad, and surrounding districts, are likely to get moderate to heavy rainfall during this period.
Moreover, the PMD has warned of possible damage to weak infrastructure, such as electric poles, billboards, and solar panels, due to strong winds and lightning.
The PMD further warned of landslides in mountainous areas, flash floods in streams and hill torrents, and urban flooding in big cities.
Meanwhile, tourists, travelers, and farmers are urged to take precautionary measures and adjust their activities to minimize risks.
