Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced that Canada might recognize Palestine as a state, following recent announcements from Norway, Ireland, and Spain expressing their intention to do so.
Trudeau made the statement during a session in the House of Commons, indicating that Canada is open to recognizing Palestine, but emphasized the importance of timing and building a credible path towards lasting peace in the region. He also mentioned Canada’s support for a two-state solution and expressed concern about the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
Trudeau’s remarks came in response to urging from New Democratic Party (NDP) MP Heather McPherson to take a stand against the Gaza conflict.
The Green Party of Canada has also backed this decision, stating that recognizing Palestine as a state is both a moral and strategic imperative for Canada.
While Norway, Spain, and Ireland have taken steps towards recognition, Europe remains divided on the issue, with France indicating that it’s not the right time for recognition amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
This announcement comes as the International Criminal Court prosecutor revealed plans to seek arrest warrants for leaders from both Israel and Hamas, further adding to diplomatic tensions in the region.
