ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday performed the groundbreaking of the 32-km-long Margalla Avenue highway project today.
The prime minister said given the increase in the population of the federal capital, there is a need to develop more road infrastructure projects in Islamabad.
He assured that the protection of environment will be fully taken care of whilst executing such projects. He said it is the first government which has given serious consideration and priority to deal with the issue of climate change.
PM Imran Khan said the highway project will not only ensure protection of Margalla Hills National Park but also promote tourism by ensuring easy access to Galiyat like picturesque sites.
In a series of tweets, Senator Faisal Javed said Margalla Avenue will link M-1 to Murree road and under the first phase it will connect GT Road with E-10 and Constitution Avenue as well.
He said the project was part of Master Plan of Islamabad prepared in 1960 but could not be constructed yet. He said Capital Development Authority is initiating work on this project. “Once a bankrupt organization CDA has now become financially vibrant under the leadership of Prime Minister Imran Khan,” he said.

It should be noted that the government decided to construct this road from Sangjani area on GT Road to Satra Meel. The CDA board had decided to implement the project done through Ministry of Defense.
The board said there were certain strategic and defense communication infrastructure and installation located in various portions of the alignment of this project, therefore, it should be carried out through ministry of defence.
Earlier this month, Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) relaxed its rules recommended the federal government to execute this project on single tender basis.
