LAHORE: A local court on Thursday granted bail to sound system and video vendor Asif Nazar Butt popularly known as DJ Butt.
The court released him on bail against surety bonds worth Rs50,000. Butt was arrested a day ago in a case pertaining to possessing illegal weapons and violations or coronavirus-related safety precautions.
During the hearing, Butt maintained that the rifle was legally owned and he had a license for it. He also claimed to have been beaten and tortured by police in custody.
“I am still Prime Minister Imran Khan’s tiger,” said Butt. The musician was famously known for providing the sound system for the PTI’s 2014 sit-in in Islamabad.
Recently, he has been providing the sound system to public gatherings organized by the opposition-led Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM)
DJ Butt’s company was tasked with making the sound arrangements for the rally hosted by PML-N. The opposition had vowed to continue its protest and hold the rally in Lahore at any cost.
The Punjab government has denied permission to hold a public gathering citing a surge in coronavirus cases. The opposition is also devising a strategy for mass resignations from the assemblies and planning a long march to Islamabad.
The PDM launched an anti-government campaign in September. It has held several rallies in major cities of Pakistan. The government has opposed mass gatherings due to a spike in the number of coronavirus cases.
In an interview on Saturday, the prime minister said that the authorities will lodge cases against those providing logistical facilities such as echo sound systems and chairs for the upcoming PDM rally.
