A video of a woman celebrating her divorce has gone viral on social media, sparking widespread debate and mixed reactions.
In the clip, the woman, dressed in yellow, joyfully cuts a cake labeled “Happy Divorce” surrounded by friends. She expresses her relief by slicing through her Nikah dupatta and tearing up wedding photos, suggesting she’s moving on from what might have been an unhappy or forced relationship.
The unconventional celebration received considerable backlash, with many online users criticizing it as inappropriate. Commenters argued that divorce, as a painful experience, should not be celebrated in this way, calling it a display of “toxic” behavior.
Earlier in July, another video of a Pakistani woman marking her divorce with a dance party went viral. In this video, the woman, dressed in a purple lehenga, dances energetically to the Bollywood song “Zor Ka Jhatka,” a track that humorously critiques marriage. Behind her, a banner reading “Divorce Mubarak” parodies the traditional “Shaadi Mubarak” greeting, adding a bold twist to the celebration.
