GLASGOW: Pakistan’s Fatima Zahra etched her name in the annals of sports history today, becoming the first Pakistani female athlete to win a boxing medal at the Commonwealth Games.
Her bronze medal in the 60 kg category marks a monumental achievement for the nation, ending a 12-year medal drought in boxing at the Games since 2014.
Fatima Zahra’s journey to the podium was nothing short of inspiring. In the semi-finals, she faced off against Canada’s formidable Mary-Bethul in a high-stakes match.
The Canadian boxer took an early lead, securing a 4-1 advantage in the first round. Despite Zahra’s resilience, the second round saw the referee halt the contest, declaring Mary-Bethul the winner by Referee Stopped Contest (RSC).
Though defeated, Zahra’s performance earned her a bronze medal, a testament to her skill, determination, and the historic significance of her achievement.
Fatima Zahra’s victory is a landmark moment for Pakistani women in sports.
She defeated New Zealand’s Jordan Wilson in the earlier rounds to secure her place in the semi-finals, proving her mettle on the international stage.
Her bronze medal not only highlights her personal triumph but also reignites Pakistan’s presence in Commonwealth boxing after a long hiatus.
