ISLAMABAD: Pakistan reported more than fifteen hundred cases of the novel coronavirus in a single day on Sunday, as the Omicron variant surges across the country amid the fifth wave.
According to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), Pakistan reported 1,573 cases and seven deaths in the previous 24-hour period. The national tally of coronavirus cases has reached 1,304,058 while the death toll stands at 28,969.
The positivity ratio has risen to 3.16%, while the number of active has increased to 16,432 after the surge in cases. There were 49,658 tests conducted in the previous day leading to new cases. There are 604 people who still remain in critical condition. Overall 1,258,657 people have recovered from the virus, including 235 in the past day.
Sindh has recorded the highest number of cases and remains the worst affected region. The province has recorded 486,740 cases and 7,681 deaths while there are 10,394 active cases.
Punjab has recorded 447,530 cases and 13,079 deaths, while the number of active cases in the province remains 4,678. Islamabad has recorded 109,283 cases and 967 deaths while there are 685 active cases in the federal capital.
The number of cases in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa stands at 181,715 and 5,942 deaths, while Balochistan has recorded 33,658 cases and 367 deaths. Gilgit Baltistan had recorded 10,430 cases and 186 deaths while Azad Kashmir has recorded 34,702 cases and 747 deaths.
