ISLAMABAD: The number of new cases of COVID-19 continued to rise this week, as the positivity ratio hit 8.43 percent today (Monday) amid the ongoing third wave of the coronavirus pandemic, data issued by the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) suggested.
The NCOC confirmed the upward trend which started at the beginning of March, after an unprecedented fall earlier in the year when the number of new cases was reduced to around 1,000.
The number of active cases jumped to 33,070 with 3,669 more people testing positive for the virus in the last 24 hours, whereas, 1,686 people recovered from the deadly disease. Meanwhile, another 40 deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours, taking the total death tally to 13,757 across the country.
The country is in the grip of a third wave of the disease. Earlier on Saturday, Pakistan recorded its highest single-day increase in coronavirus infections this year with 3,876 new cases. The rise in the single-day tally also pushed the positivity ratio to 9.4%.
