ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has recorded 3,138 new cases and 56 deaths in the last 24 hours due to the novel coronavirus.
According to the latest figures from the National Command and Control Centre (NCOC), 56 more people succumbed to the disease, taking the death toll to 8,603.
The national tally of cases now currently stands at 429,280. The total number of active cases is 46,376 and the positivity rate was recorded at 7.8 percent. Around 2,030 patients have recovered from the virus during the last 24 hours and 2,575 patients are in critical condition.
A total of 40,202 tests were conducted across the country during this period. Overall 374,301 people have recovered from the deadly disease so far while 5,906,146 samples have been tested thus far.
Sindh has recovered the highest number of cases at 189,687 and 3,099 deaths. There are 23,096 active cases while the cities of Karachi and Hyderabad have witnessed the highest positivity rate.
Punjab has recorded 125,250 cases so far resulting in 3,265 deaths. The province had 10,145 active cases. A smart lockdown was imposed in 55 localities of Lahore due to the surging number of cases amid the second wave.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had recorded 50,762 cases and 1,439 deaths while there are 4,690 active cases. Balochistan has seen 17,604 cases, 171 deaths and 523 active cases.
Islamabad Capital Territory has 33,695 confirmed cases with 348 deaths. There are still 6,344 active cases in the federal capital. Azad Kashmir recorded 7,517 cases and 183 deaths so far, while Gilgit Baltistan has 4,765 cases and 98 deaths.
Prime Minister Imran Khan convened a meeting of the National Coordination Committee (NCC) today to review the coronavirus situation in the country.
The prime minister will be briefed by the NCOC on the coronavirus situation and several important decisions including imposing smart lockdowns would be taken.
Federal Minister for Planning and Development Asad Umar had warned of imposing tougher restrictions if violations of coronavirus standard operating procedure (SOPs) continues amid the second wave of COVID-19. He warned COVD-19 cases will go up if health guidelines are not adhered to, piling pressure on hospitals.
