Karachi is the capital city of the province of Sindh, Pakistan. It is the largest city in Pakistan and 12th largest in the world, with a population of over 20 million.

Pakistan’s population could surge to 400 million by 2040 unless urgent action is taken, Minister of State for Health Dr Mukhtar Ahmad Bharath warned on Wednesday, urging greater public awareness and responsible family planning to address the country’s rapid population growth.

Speaking at a ceremony in Islamabad’s Tarlai, he said maternal and child healthcare, along with family planning, were national priorities.

He noted that low use of modern contraceptives contributes to unintended pregnancies and unsafe abortions, increasing health risks for women.

Dr Bharath also highlighted government efforts, including a national council on population, while China and the UNFPA donated $2 million in reproductive health supplies.

Dr Bharath urged Pakistanis to adopt responsible family planning practices, stressing that informed decisions today are essential to securing a healthier and more prosperous future for coming generations.

Meanwhile, a Health Ministry spokesperson said the Chinese government, in collaboration with the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), has provided Pakistan with reproductive health and family planning medicines, medical supplies, and equipment worth $2 million to support maternal and reproductive healthcare services.
