Mohammed Ali Naqvi, a three-time Emmy-nominated filmmaker and Chairman of the Pakistani Academy Selection Committee, has unveiled the Pakistan Crescent Collective (PCC) which will represent the country’s official presence at the Cannes Film Festival 2024, the week-long event starting May 14.
This initiative signifies Pakistan’s inaugural official presence at the 77th annual Cannes Film Festival, establishing a central platform for the country for the first time, as announced in a press release on Monday.
The PCC will function as a pivotal entity during the week-long event at Cannes from May 14-20, with a mission to discover and nurture emerging talent, safeguard cinematic creations, and promote Pakistani and diaspora films on a global scale, thus propelling Pakistan’s visual narrative.
Naqvi emphasized the significance of initiatives like The Crescent Collective, particularly for a nation lacking a dedicated hub at Cannes. He stated, “We are committed to uplifting Pakistani cinema and showcasing talent, both domestically and internationally. It’s time to acknowledge and celebrate our own achievements.”
In recent years, Pakistan has left a notable mark at Cannes with acclaimed films such as Joyland in 2022 and last year’s In Flames, which served as the country’s official submissions to the Academy Awards.
Moreover, The Legend of Maula Jatt attained the distinction of being the highest-grossing Pakistani film to date, while Pakistani representation in Hollywood has surged. Naqvi’s involvement includes co-executive producing two seasons of the Netflix hit, Turning Point: The Bomb & The Cold War, and directing The Accused: Damned or Devoted?, which marked the first Pakistani film nominated for a Primetime Emmy for Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking.
