Oscar 2020 hits all-time low viewership

ABC’s telecast of the Academy Awards hit an all-time low viewership of 23.6 million viewers.

According to the Neilson Company, the audience was down to 20 percent from a year ago amid an industry-wide decline in linear TV viewing.

Last time the lowest rating for the Oscar awards was 26.5 million in 2018.

For the second straight year, the academy awards went hostless. 

The south-korean film, ‘Parasite’ wins the best picture award, and made history as the first non-English film to win the top award.

Joaquin Phoenix won the best actor award for Joker. While Renee Zellweger won the best actress awards for playing Judy Garland in Judy.

A website devoted to awards show news said, “The sow was too predictable, too white and too boring.”

 “There were few surprises and few indelible moments in the Oscar,” the website said.

The website further said, “The only surprise was the best film award, and the average viewer hadn’t seen Parasite or 1917, that’s the reason people were not emotionally invested.”

Despite the rating slump, the Oscars remain the most-watched awards show compared to others.
