Heavy rain has triggered a flood-like situation in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, inundating low-lying areas and forcing evacuations as the water level in Nullah Lai surged to a dangerous 18 feet. Water has entered homes in several neighborhoods, while authorities remain on high alert.
The water level in Rawalpindi’s Nullah Lai rose to 18 feet. After reaching a dangerously high level, the evacuation of residents began in the Gwalamandi and Katarian areas.
Rain that started around 1am continued until morning, causing the water level in Nullah Lai to rise steadily. In view of the situation, flood warning sirens were also sounded in Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
Sources said the Rawalpindi district administration had sought assistance from the Pakistan Army to deal with the emergency.
Officials said the water level in Katarian reached a dangerous point within just half an hour. Relevant authorities are continuously monitoring the situation.
Residents have been advised to stay away from Nullah Lai, streams and low-lying areas and take precautionary measures.
An average of 74mm of rain was recorded in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. The highest rainfall, 113mm, was recorded in Golra, followed by 40mm in Bokra, 70mm in Saidpur, 57mm in H-8 and 44mm in Shamsabad.
The Meteorological Department has forecast further rain in various areas today, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, other parts of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.
