The upcoming drama titled ‘Noor Jahan’ starring Saba Hameed has been facing backlash over its distressing storyline featuring regressive women.
Portraying women as weak in Pakistani dramas is nothing new but many storylines have seen massive change, however, unfortunately, Saba Hameed starrer has showcased nothing new.
Written by Zanjabeel Asim Shah and directed by Musaddiq Malek, the drama has everything, a stellar cast and powerful production, how it lacks in portraying women, at least that’s what social media users think.
Besides Saba Hameed, the upcoming drama features Noor Hassan, Kubra Khan, Hajra Yamin, Zoya Nasir, and Ali Rehman Khan. As per the trailer, the story revolves around a dictatorial elderly woman who manipulates her sons’ lives, perpetuating harmful gender stereotypes.
She in the trailer narrates the story of a king who loses respect and stature after the birth of a daughter. The monologue keeps up the harmful idea that a man must have sons to gain respect.
The drama which is slated to release on May 25, has left many viewers outraged expressing frustration with veteran actress Saba for accepting such harmful roles. Many believed that despite the world moving forward, Pakistan is going backward at twice the speed.
It is not new in Pakistan to showcase a stereotypical representation of women in our media where females are depicted as a homemakers, assistants to professionals and officers, and labour rather than authoritative characters like doctors, officers, army, sportswomen, and businesswomen who are also the realistic image of women.
