India collapsed to a stunning series defeat at home, its first in 12 years, as they were bowled out for 245 by New Zealand in their pursuit of 359 on the third day of the second test on Saturday, with Mitchell Santner taking six wickets.
Santner, who was named Man of the Match, finished with figures of 6-104 for a remarkable match total of 13 wickets, helping New Zealand secure a historic 2-0 series victory in India.
Senior spinner Ajaz Patel claimed the final two wickets, dismissing Ravindra Jadeja for 42 to seal the 113-run win. The loss marked a significant setback for India, who were dismantled by eight wickets in the seamer-friendly conditions of the first test in Bengaluru, resulting in their first home series defeat since England’s 2-1 victory in 2012.
India’s impressive streak of 18 consecutive home series wins, intact since that loss, was ended by an inspired New Zealand side, clearly dominant in both matches and now eyeing a clean sweep in the series finale in Mumbai on Friday.
“It’s an incredibly special feeling, and I’m very proud to be here,” said new permanent captain Tom Latham, who took over from Tim Southee following New Zealand’s 2-0 loss in Sri Lanka.
