Former prime minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo, Nawaz Sharif, has vowed to serve masses at homecoming rally in Lahore after landing in Islamabad on Saturday, ending his four-year self-imposed exile in London.
Addressing the charged crowd in Lahore, he expressed his unwavering commitment to serving the people of Pakistan. He shared his experiences of facing imprisonment, deportations, and false allegations but affirmed his dedication to public service whenever the opportunity arose.
He proceeded to highlight his achievements during his previous terms as prime minister, underscoring his role in eliminating power outages and reducing electricity tariffs.
Nawaz said he wanted to make amends, but he also acknowledged that he still carried some sadness in his heart. He spoke warmly about his late mother and wife, remarking that it was always a happy occasion for him to return home and be greeted by Begum Kulsoom Nawaz.
Reiterating that he never caved in to pressure to abandon nuclear testing, the former prime minister highlighted his economic accomplishments and choices made with the nation’s best interests in mind.
Moreover, he inquired about the US dollar’s exchange rate from his prior stint as prime minister. He regretted that the US dollar had become more valuable than Rs 250 and that this had caused inflation to spike.
Despite prior reports suggesting Nawaz would concentrate his speech on economic achievements and avoid criticizing purported factors associated with his dismissal, the former prime minister couldn’t resist making a jab at the Panama ruling. He argued that Pakistan’s advancement and growth had been hampered by the ruling.
The PML-N leader asserted that the efforts of his PML-N government were instrumental in Pakistan’s possible inclusion among the G-20 economies during his last tenure.
Despite facing political victimization, the PML-N remained committed to serving the people, successfully curbing inflation, and maintaining affordable prices for essential goods, he said and also reminded the crowd of the extensive motorway construction projects across Pakistan.
