RAWALPINDI: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Farooq Amjad Mir has said that the government is making efforts to bring back former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, while the party has no connection with the treason case lodged against him in Lahore.
In a conversation with MM News, PTI’s Information Secretary Rawalpindi Farooq Mir said the party has no link with the First Information Report (FIR) filed against Nawaz Sharif and Azad Kashmir’s premier in Lahore over provocative speeches against state institutions.
“The FIR is instead benefiting Nawaz Sharif himself. He was convicted by the courts and lied that he wants to seek medical treatment in Britain for eight weeks and stayed there,” he said.
The PTI leader claimed that Nawaz Sharif is using all legal and political options and filed the case through a party activist to use it as a pretext to seek political asylum in London.
According to British laws, a person can apply for political refuge if he is charged in any case which includes the death penalty. Farooq Mir revealed that Nawaz Sharif has instructed his lawyers to use all legal options who advised him that it was necessary that a case should be registered.
He said that PTI minister Fawad Chaudhry had already claimed that Prime Minister Imran Khan was unaware of the case and had expressed his disappointment. The prime minister had said the party had no connection and did not file sedition cases against political opponents but rather it was a PML-N era tactic.
He said the PTI has nothing to gain with lodging the treason case against Nawaz Sharif. He clarified that despite the case, the government will make all possible efforts to extradite the former prime minister from UK to face the courts.
