Meta Platforms has launched a new synthetic AI tool called Movie Gen, which can create high-quality videos from text and image prompts, placing it as a competitor to Sora OpenAI.
With its “highest quality media format,” Movie Gen can produce videos up to 16 seconds long from text or photo input, and offers video editing features.
Though not yet commercially available to app users, Meta highlighted that Movie Gen “outperforms similar models in the industry” and is part of the company’s ongoing commitment to sharing fundamental AI research with the broader community.
Movies Gen represents Meta’s “third wave” of synthetic AI innovations, combining image, video, audio and 3D animation styles.
The system was trained using a proprietary and publicly available dataset.
In terms of editing capabilities, Movie Gen allows users to remove, add, or replace visual elements, or make significant changes like altering backgrounds or styles, distinguishing it from traditional editing tools that require specialized skills or generative tools that lack precision.
Meta emphasized that Movie Gen is designed to enhance creativity rather than replace artists or animators, with the long-term goal of enabling everyone to create high-definition videos and audio with ease.
The company also hinted at potential future integrations with its social platforms, including Instagram and WhatsApp.
