The federal government on Friday approved the deployment of Pakistan Army’s troops to Islamabad under Article 245 of the Constitution to maintain law and order during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit which is scheduled to be held in the federal capital on October 15-16.
“The exact area of deployment and additional troop requirements, if necessary, will be determined by the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration in consultation with relevant stakeholders,” the statement said.
The military will be deployed from October 5 to 17 to help maintain public order.
Earlier, India’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar will visit Pakistan later this month to attend the meeting. However, it is not clear whether he will meet Pakistani authorities.
Moreover, a comprehensive security plan for the event was approved at a meeting chaired by Home Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Wednesday.
The minister emphasized the importance of the SCO meeting and said that many world leaders will be present, which is a great honor for the country.
He also announced that some soldiers of Pakistan Army, Rangers, Border Force and Punjab Police have been deployed to ensure the safety of all tourists.
