The ceiling of the Mere Husband Ki Biwi set collapsed in Mumbai on Saturday, injuring several people, including actor Arjun Kapoor, director Mudassar Aziz, and producer Jackky Bhagnani.
According to a report by Indian Express on Monday, The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) released a statement, confirming that no major fatalities occurred. The association’s president, BN Tiwari, stated, “There were no major injuries. Anything could have happened, but thank God, no one was seriously hurt. The shoot has been halted at the location. The ceiling collapse happened due to a lack of maintenance.”
He added, “We’ve sent a letter to both the Prime Minister in Delhi and the Maharashtra Chief Minister regarding the health and safety of workers in the industry. We have also contacted Film City, as the foundations are so old they could collapse at any moment. A structural audit is needed. There’s no fire exit in case of an emergency. The entire film industry is operating on divine support, but how long will that last?”
Tiwari also mentioned that incidents like this happen frequently but are seldom reported. “Compensation is paid, and things are swept under the rug. Many issues don’t even reach us due to fear of losing work,” he said. He emphasized that it is the responsibility of the art director and studio owner to maintain the studio.
They build the studio and keep booking shoots without proper maintenance. If the government doesn’t take action, shoots will move out of Mumbai. Actors and producers involved in the movie have yet to comment. The film also stars Bhumi Pednekar and Rakul Preet Singh in lead roles.
