On Saturday night, a tragedy took place in Karachi which saddened every Pakistani. Prominent religious scholar Maulana Dr Muhammad Adil Khan was assassinated by unidentified men. Very few clerics are highly educated. MaulanaAdil is one of them who did his Ph.D. in Islamic Culture and was a doctor in the same vein.
Maulana Adil Khan belonged to a religious family. He was the eldest son of Shaykh-ul-HadeethMaulanaSaleemullah Khan. He graduated in the traditional Dars-e-Nizami from Jamia Farooqia in 1973; he got a B.A in human science in 1976, an M.A in Arabic in 1978 and a Ph.D. in Islamic Culture in 1992 from the University of Karachi.
Maulana Adil was the general secretary of Jamia Farooqia seminary in Karachi from 1986 to 2010. He stayed by the side of his father Maulana Saleemullah Khan in Tehreek-e-Sawad Azam. Khan had also established an Islamic center in Lodi, California for young children, where he was preaching Islam and not only Muslims but also non-Muslims are guided.
He, along with his teenage son, was arrested and investigated by the US authorities and deported back in 2005. According to the Voice of America, “they were investigated in connection with possible terrorist activity and agreed to be deported in exchange for the government dropping charges that they misrepresented themselves when entering the country.”
Khan was the professor at the International Islamic University Malaysia from 2010 to 2018. He was an excellent teacher, orator and writer. He returned to Pakistan after the death of his father Saleemullah Khan on 15 January 2017 and became the rector and a Professor of Hadīth at Jamia Farooqia.
The assassination of Maulana Dr Adil Farooqi has created a vacuum that is impossible to fill.
He had access to religious as well as secular and social sciences. Such scholars are born in centuries. The martyrdom of Maulana Dr Adil Farooqi has created a state of grief in the Islamic world. It is impossible to rectify this by arresting and punishing the culprits, it will only be a small remedy.
The arrest of the culprits is also important because it could reveal the motives behind his assassination and whether or not the conspiracy could be overturned, through which the terrorists chose to assassinate one of the most popular clerics in the religion.
