Former Member of the National Assembly and senior politician Mahmood Moulvi has stated that Pakistan does not currently need to import 500,000 tons of sugar, as the country already holds a surplus stock of 3 million tons, sufficient to meet domestic needs for the next six months.
In an official statement, Mahmood Moulvi highlighted that Pakistan’s total monthly sugar consumption is approximately 450,000 tons, and with the next sugarcane crushing season set to begin in November, local production will further stabilize supply in the coming months.
He urged the government to take immediate steps to ensure price stability and continuous supply of sugar across the country.
Mahmood Moulvi stressed that authorities should engage with sugar mill owners to find an effective and long-term solution to this issue.
He further warned that unnecessary sugar imports would not only waste valuable foreign exchange reserves but also negatively impact local farmers and industrial stakeholders.
