KARACHI: A local cleric and religious scholar was killed on Tuesday evening in Gulistan-e-Jauhar area of Karachi.
Maulana Zia-ur-Rahman Shaikh was the head of the Madrasseh Jamia Abubakar Islamia. Police said the victim was shot and killed by unknown persons in Block 16, Gulistan-e-Jauhar.
Police said the deceased Sheikh Zia ur Rahman was the mahatmam (administrator) of Jamia Abu Bakr Madrassah (seminary) located in Block 5, Gulshan-e-Iqbal.
Additional IG Karachi Khadim Hussain Rind took notice of the killing and sought a complete detailed inquiry report of the incident from the DIG East.
The Karachi police chief issued orders for the immediate arrest of the accused. He said the killing was a terrorist incident aimed at disrupting the law and order situation on the occasion of Rabiul Awal.
He issued instructions to form a team to investigate the incident. The police said they were investigating the case from possible angles including targeted killing.
The CTD has collected the evidence of the incident. Police also recovered 11 shells of two different weapons – 9mm pistol and 30 bore – from the crime scene.
IG Sindh Riffat Mukhtar has sought details from SSP East regarding the incident of the killing of Jamia Abu Bakar Islamia’s teacher in Gulistan Johar Block 16.
