ISLAMABAD: President of Pakistan Dr. Arif Alvi on Wednesday said that an effective local bodies system strengthens democracy as it ensures devolution of powers.
He was addressing a National Conference on Future of Local Government in Islamabad on Wednesday.
The president said every political party has political spirit of contacting people and serving them.
The president said besides devolving powers at grassroots level, local government system also leads to distribution of resources, diffusion of power and authority, deconstruction of management and decentralization of administrative service.
He said under the constitution, provinces are responsible to establish an effective local government system.
Earlier, Minister for Science and Technology Shibli Faraz has reiterated government’s resolve to ensure free, fair and transparent elections through use of Electronic Voting Machines.
He stressed that an effective and sustainable local bodies system is important to address the problems of the people at grassroots level.
Earlier this month, Prime Minister Imran Khan had directed the authorities concerned to take steps for immediate holding of local bodies elections in Punjab after getting a briefing on the new model of the local government.
Chairing a meeting regarding the local bodies system in Punjab province, the prime minister had emphasized that the local government was the basic structure of democracy and reiterated that without a strong local bodies system democracy was incomplete.
Federal ministers Asad Umar, Fawad Chaudhry, Shafqat Mahmood, Makhdoom Khusro Bakhtiar, Ghulam Sarwar Khan, Chaudhry Tariq Bashir Cheema, Moonis Elahi, Provincial Minister for Punjab Abdul Aleem Khan and senior officers attended the meeting.
