KARACHI: The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) has unveiled a special emergency plan to ensure an uninterrupted water supply and effective sewerage management for mourners during the Chehlum of Imam Hussain (RA).
On the directives of KWSC Chief Executive Officer Ahmed Ali Siddiqui, all relevant officials, including superintending engineers, executive engineers, and field staff, have been placed on high alert.
According to the corporation’s spokesperson, district superintending engineers have been instructed to remain in close coordination with the district administration, police, elected public representatives, Shia scholars, the Jafaria Alliance, and other religious organizations to ensure smooth arrangements.
Officials have also been directed to complete water supply arrangements, clean sewerage lines, repair manholes, and install manhole covers along the routes of processions, as well as at mosques, imambargahs, mourning gatherings (majalis), and sabeels (refreshment stalls).
The CEO has ordered immediate action on any complaints related to water supply or sewerage services. All necessary machinery, including jetting and suction machines, has been directed to remain operational, with additional staff deployed and emergency response teams on standby at all times.
The spokesperson added that the Hydrants Cell has also been instructed to provide water tankers, where required, to mosques, imambargahs, majalis, sabeels, processions, and other religious gatherings.
To oversee Muharram and Chehlum arrangements, Chief Engineers Aftab Alam Chandio, Muhammad Zahid, Shafqat Maghan, and Shehbaz Bashir have been appointed as focal persons.
They will monitor all arrangements and ensure an immediate response to any emergency.
According to KWSC officials, providing the best possible civic services to citizens and mourners during the Chehlum of Imam Hussain (RA) remains the corporation’s top priority. All concerned officers have also been instructed to remain present in the field to supervise arrangements and ensure smooth operations.
