KARACHI: The University of Karachi University Teachers’ Society had scheduled a discussion programme with the Chairman Higher Education Commission on issues related to the policies of the HEC, but now it has been canceled due to alleged pressure from two high-ranking personalities of Karachi University and former HEC chairman.

The appointment of Dr. Tariq Banuri as Chairman HEC is being propagandized in the Education Departments on a large scale by those who have been rewarded for fraud in the name of education. The program has been canceled out of fear of being exposed in front of esteemed teachers of the university during answers to the questions of the teachers about them.

Sources said that some teachers of the Teachers’ Society, including Dr. Riaz Ahmed and Dr. Firdous Imran Ali, have tried their best to hold the program on February 18 in any case, but due to pressure over the administration the programme is being canceled.

It is to be noted that some officials, fearful of the reforms brought for the betterment of education by Chairman HEC Tariq Banuri, have started strong propaganda against him due to which Dr. Ayesha Razzaq, Advisor to the Ministry of Education also resigned from the post. However, her resignation was not accepted by the Ministry of Education. According to sources, due to Dr. Ayesha’s meeting with HEC Chairman Tariq Banuri, an explanation was sought from some officials of the Ministry.

When the President of Karachi University Teachers’ Society (KUTS) Shah Ali Al-Qadr was contacted, he said that we had a program which we have terminated ourselves because the case of Chairman Higher Education Commission Tariq Banuri is going on in the Supreme Court and we do not think that he should be invited to the program, but if the decision comes in his favor then he will be invited.

When contacted, Mohsin, General Secretary, Karachi University Teachers’ Society, said that we have various committees which conduct seminars and the convener of the seminar committee chairman is Maqsood Ali Ansari. However, the convener of the seminar committee did not answer the phone after making several calls.

However, the chairman of the Higher Education Commission, Dr. Tariq Banuri said when contacted. If I was called, I would go.

It should be noted that the position adopted by the Teachers Society to postpone the program is being denied by inviting them because the case of Tariq Banuri pending in the court is not two weeks ago but several months old.
