British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday said that Britain won’t get directly involved in the ongoing conflict with Iran.

Speaking at a press conference in London, Starmer said the UK’s top priority remains protecting its citizens in the region while taking necessary measures to defend the country and its allies.

He said that the UK will keep pushing for peace and work to ease tensions in the Middle East.

He emphasised that Britain will not be drawn into a broader conflict, and reaffirmed that the government is focused on diplomatic efforts to achieve a swift resolution that restores security and stability in the region.

Keir Starmer said the UK is working with allies on a viable plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, but says it will not be a Nato mission.

The UK prime minister said that over 92,000 British citizens have been evacuated home via commercial and government-chartered flights.

On the prospect of military deployment, the British prime minister said that sending armed forces abroad is “one of the most difficult decisions for any leader.”

He added that if troops are sent into a dangerous situation, they have the right to be assured that such action is based on clear legal authority and a fully considered plan.

Starmer stressed that protecting British interests while avoiding rash decisions is central to his leadership philosophy.

He expressed confidence that history will judge his government’s approach as the correct strategy.

He added that the UK will also ensure that Russia does not take advantage of the war in the region.

The British prime minister noted that the safety of British citizens in the region is the UK’s top priority, including ongoing efforts to assist those in Lebanon.

He also highlighted the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open to ensure smooth oil supply and stability in global markets.

Keir Starmer acknowledged that this is a complex challenge and said Britain is working with all allies to develop a coordinated plan, which may include negotiations with Iran.

Speaking about the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Starmer said that the UK will not allow Russia to benefit from instability in the Middle East.

Britain is a key ally of the United States and a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO).
