Karachi’s water supply system is set to undergo a major upgrade as work begins on the modernization of the Gharo Old Pump House, a move that may temporarily disrupt water supply to parts of the city.
According to a spokesperson for the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC), technical work will be carried out over a 48-hour period, from 10:00 a.m. on August 3 to 10:00 a.m. on August 5.
The upgrade includes the installation and energization of new motors, pumps, and modern switchgear, the relocation of a 1,000-kVA transformer, the laying of new power cables, and the activation of an upgraded switching system.
The corporation said the Gharo New Pump House will remain fully operational during the maintenance period, ensuring continued water pumping. However, the shutdown of the old pump house is expected to result in a temporary shortfall of approximately 25 million gallons of water per day.
KWSC supplies around 650 million gallons of water daily to Karachi, of which 625 million gallons will continue to be delivered as usual during the upgrade.
Areas likely to experience temporary water shortages include Ibrahim Hyderi, Landhi, Shah Faisal Colony, PAF Base, and parts of Karsaz.
KWSC Chief Executive Officer Ahmed Ali Siddiqui has directed all concerned officials to complete the technical work within the scheduled timeframe to minimize inconvenience for residents.
The corporation has urged people living in the affected areas to use water sparingly and store an adequate supply in advance for the period between August 3 and August 5.
