As the year 2023 approaches its end, Karachi continues to grapple with a persistent rise in street crimes, with a reported 130 fatalities attributed to snatching incidents.
Contrary to government claims of success in curbing street crime, statistics reveal a significant escalation from 2022, with a daily rate reaching 247 incidents in 2023.
The Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) reports a staggering 82,632 street crime incidents recorded this year alone, reflecting an alarming lack of control over criminal activities in the city. Notably, murder and robbery cases have seen a surge, with a total of 619 reported murders in 2023.
August emerged as the most concerning month, witnessing 8,207 reported incidents, including mobile phone snatching, car theft, motorcycle theft, and various other crimes. In January, 7,249 street crime incidents were recorded, escalating in subsequent months, reaching 7,185 incidents in November.
The monthly breakdown highlights the persistence of street crime throughout the year, affecting thousands of residents and resulting in the loss of valuable possessions such as mobile phones, cars, and motorbikes. Despite efforts to address the issue, the data underscores the ongoing challenges in combating street crime in Karachi.
