Mayor of Karachi and spokesperson for the Sindh government, Murtaza Wahab, has demanded that the Prime Minister cancel the canals project, alleging that the issue was worsened by ministers from Punjab.
Speaking at the inauguration of the parking area at Empress Market in Saddar, Murtaza Wahab alleged that Punjab’s ministers disrupted the matter of the canals. He stated that Sindh fought its case strongly and that the Prime Minister should cancel the canals project in response to Bilawal Bhutto’s demand.
Murtaza Wahab stated that the Sindh government extended unconditional support to the federal government because they value peace and prosperity in the country. However, statements from Punjab’s ministers have complicated the situation.
He further said that it is clear that water scarcity is increasing and water from one region cannot simply be diverted to another. President Zardari, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, and the Chief Minister of Sindh have all expressed their concerns about the canals. “We are in favor of development, but we cannot compromise on the issue of water scarcity,” he said.
He also mentioned that the Lahore High Court itself is urging action on water issues, and that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif should immediately halt the canals project.
It is worth noting that earlier, Murtaza Wahab said that Empress Market, being a historical site, has also been a hub of problems where people face difficulties while passing through. The KMC (Karachi Metropolitan Corporation) has pledged to relieve the public of these challenges.
He added that they are not complaining about lack of authority and will continue to work for the city’s development. Those affected by development projects will be given alternative spaces, and citizens should recognize their responsibilities and cooperate with the administration.
