KARACHI: Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hasan Lanjar has claimed that Karachi is a better city than New York.
Speaking in the Sindh Assembly, the provincial minister said Karachi belongs to Sindhis, Urdu speakers, Punjabis and everyone else. “Karachi is and will remain the capital of Sindh. It will not be moved here or there through speeches,” he said.
Lanjar added that Karachi now ranks 170th among dangerous cities globally, and that makes it safer than New York. He flagged motorcycle theft as a major problem and said legislation is needed. “Theft won’t come down until trackers are made mandatory on bikes,” he said.
Addressing the opposition, the minister recalled the 1992 operation. “MQM friends were part of the government then, we were in opposition and our people were also arrested,” he said. He alleged attempts have been made in every era to keep Karachi unstable. “There will be no compromise on law and order. If you’re taking us back to 1992, anyone who takes the law into their own hands, even an MPA, will face action.”
Lanjar said the PPP government will not allow ‘bori-band’ bodies. “If body bags are your party policy, it’s wrong,” he said. He also rejected attempts to distort history, noting that many assembly members’ ancestors served in the 1935 assembly, which had 85 Sindhi Muslim members who owned land at the time.
